Transfer photos from Android to an iPhone

Last checked

Android's own sharing and Apple's AirDrop do not talk to each other on most phones. A web page does: open toss2.me on both phones, and the Android phone can send photos, videos and documents straight to the iPhone.

Steps

  1. On the iPhone, open toss2.me in Safari.
  2. On the Android phone, open toss2.me in Chrome. On the same Wi-Fi, the iPhone appears in the list within a few seconds.
  3. Tap the iPhone, then Choose files. Android opens a picker with your photos and albums; select several at once.
  4. On the iPhone, press Accept, then Save next to each file. Safari saves them to the Files app, in Downloads.
  5. To put a photo in the Photos app, open it in Files, press the share button and choose to save the image.

Not on the same Wi-Fi?

  1. Open toss2.me on both devices.
  2. On one of them, press Create a code. A 6-digit code appears.
  3. Type the code on the other device and press Join. The two devices now see each other, whatever network each one is on.
  4. Tap the other device, pick files, and accept on the other side.

The QR code under the code does the same as typing it: scan it with the iPhone's camera and the page opens already joined.

Questions

Do I need to install an app?

No. Sending and receiving both work in a normal browser tab. The command line tool is optional and only needed if you want an always-on inbox on a computer.

Where do the photos go on the iPhone?

Safari saves them to the Files app, in Downloads. From there you can open each one and save it to the Photos app with the share button.

Are my files uploaded or stored anywhere?

No. Files go straight from one device to the other over WebRTC when the networks allow it. When they do not, the file passes through a relay on Cloudflare that forwards the bytes as they arrive and keeps nothing. If the receiver is offline, nothing is sent.

Do both devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi?

No. On the same network they find each other automatically. On different networks, for example a phone on mobile data and a laptop at home, one device creates a 6-digit code and the other types it in.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no paid plan, no account and no ads.
