Send files from your phone to your computer
AirDrop only works between Apple devices. To get a photo or a PDF from a phone onto a Windows or Linux computer, or onto a Mac from an Android phone, the usual answers are a cable, emailing it to yourself, or a cloud drive. Here are two ways to do it from the browser instead.
Once: open the page on both devices
- Open tosstome on the computer and on the phone.
- If both are on the same Wi-Fi, each shows up in the other's Nearby list. Otherwise, press Create a code on one and type the 6 digits on the other.
- Tap the computer on your phone, pick the files, and accept on the computer.
Files go straight between the two devices when the network allows it, and through a relay that keeps nothing when it does not.
Every day: keep an inbox on the computer
If you send from your phone to the same computer often, run the inbox once on the computer:
tosstome listen
It prints a link and a QR code. Scan it with your phone and add the page to your home screen. From then on, opening that page and picking files sends them to a folder on the computer, from any network, with nothing to open on the computer side. The link carries a secret key, so only people you give it to can send.
Good to know
- Both devices need to be online at the same moment. If the computer is asleep, nothing is sent and nothing is stored.
- The browser receiver keeps files in memory until you save them; for videos of several gigabytes, use the inbox, which writes straight to disk.
- Need to move a link or a bit of text rather than a file? Tap the device and use the message box instead. Sending text and links.
- Same Wi-Fi and fine with installing an app? LocalSend works without internet at all.
