Send files to and from a Steam Deck

Last checked

Common ways to get a file onto a Steam Deck are a USB stick, an SD card, or an app like Warpinator or KDE Connect installed on both ends. If the Deck has a browser in Desktop Mode, a web page on each device is enough.

Before you start: a browser in Desktop Mode

From Valve's Steam Deck Desktop FAQ (checked 2026-10-30): to reach the desktop, open the STEAM menu, select Power, then Switch to Desktop. Apps are installed from the Discover Software Center on the taskbar, and "common browsers" are available there. Install one if the Deck does not have one yet. The FAQ also notes that STEAM + X brings up the on-screen keyboard.

From a PC or phone to the Steam Deck

  1. On the Deck, in Desktop Mode, open toss2.me in the browser.
  2. On the PC or phone, open toss2.me too. On the same Wi-Fi, each appears in the other's list within a few seconds.
  3. On the PC, drop the files on the Deck, or click it and press Choose files.
  4. On the Deck, press Accept, then Save. Files go to the browser's downloads folder, from where you can move them with the file manager.

From the Steam Deck to a PC or phone

The same page sends the other way: on the Deck, tap the other device and pick screenshots, clips or save files to send.

If the devices do not see each other

Different networks, a VPN, or a router that keeps devices apart can hide them from each other. Press Create a code on one device and type the 6 digits on the other. If a direct connection is blocked, the transfer goes through a relay on Cloudflare that keeps nothing.

Questions

Do I need Warpinator or KDE Connect on the Steam Deck?

No. tosstome runs in a browser in Desktop Mode, so nothing else needs to be installed on the Deck or on the other device.

Can I send files from my phone to the Steam Deck?

Yes. Open toss2.me on the phone and on the Deck. On the same Wi-Fi the Deck appears on the phone; tap it and pick files.

Are my files uploaded or stored anywhere?

No. Files go straight from one device to the other over WebRTC when the networks allow it. When they do not, the file passes through a relay on Cloudflare that forwards the bytes as they arrive and keeps nothing. If the receiver is offline, nothing is sent.

Is there a file size limit?

tosstome sets no limit. A receiving browser holds the file in memory until you save it, so for files of several gigabytes the command line inbox is the better receiver, because it writes straight to disk.
