Transfer files from a PC to an Android phone

Last checked

A USB cable means unlocking the phone, switching it to file transfer and finding the right folder. A web page open on both devices is quicker, and it sends in either direction.

Steps

  1. On the PC, open toss2.me in any browser.
  2. On the Android phone, open toss2.me in Chrome. On the same Wi-Fi, each appears in the other's list.
  3. On the PC, drag the files onto the page and drop them on the phone, or click the phone and press Choose files.
  4. On the phone, press Accept, then Save, or Save all for several. They go to the Downloads folder.

Phone on mobile data, or a different network

Press Create a code on the PC. Scan the QR code that appears with the phone's camera, or type the 6 digits on the phone and press Join. The two now see each other whatever network each one is on. More about codes.

What you can send

Phone Link not sending?

If Phone Link is what you tried first and it refused the file, see when Phone Link will not send a file.

Questions

Do I need to install an app?

No. Sending and receiving both work in a normal browser tab. The command line tool is optional and only needed if you want an always-on inbox on a computer.

Where do the files go on the Android phone?

The browser saves them to the phone's Downloads folder. Photos and videos there show up in the gallery app.

Do both devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi?

No. On the same network they find each other automatically. On different networks, for example a phone on mobile data and a laptop at home, one device creates a 6-digit code and the other types it in.

Are my files uploaded or stored anywhere?

No. Files go straight from one device to the other over WebRTC when the networks allow it. When they do not, the file passes through a relay on Cloudflare that forwards the bytes as they arrive and keeps nothing. If the receiver is offline, nothing is sent.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no paid plan, no account and no ads.
